Onyx, an offshoot of French conglomerate Vivendi, signed Sunday a 450-million-dollar-contract to keep the Egyptian city of Alexandria clean over the next 15 years.
The deal to handle one million tons of garbage a year produced by the city of 3.5 million residents was a departure for the Middle East from traditional methods, Henri Troglio, the boss of Onyx's parent, Vivendi Environnement, said.
Onyx will collect household, business, medical and non-toxic industrial waste, clean urban areas and beaches, operate three sorting and disposal plants, close three tips and open one new one, and build and operate an incinerator.
Company heads said the contract, one of the largest to be signed by Onyx in terms of population served, was an important step in developing Vivendi Environment's activities in the Middle East.
