An apparent US drone strike has killed four suspected al-Qaeda militants in the group’s stronghold in southeastern Yemen, AFP reported Thursday.
Local officials told AFP the late-Wednesday raid targeted a 4x4 vehicle transporting the suspects near the provincial capital of Mukalla.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), viewed by Washington as the most dangerous affiliate of the militant network, has controlled Mukalla since the coastal city was overrun in April, AFP reported.
The US is the only country known to operate armed drones over Yemen and has routinely targeted AQAP members during months of ongoing clashes between government loyalists and Houthi rebels.
