Four of five new migrant registration centers in Greece are "ready to function and welcome refugees," Greek defense minister Panos Kammenos told AFP on Tuesday.
Athens has come under increasing pressure to do more to control the massive refugee influx to Europe. The long-delayed registration centers will open on the islands of Lesbos, Chios, Samos, and Leros, which have been some of the main hotspots for refugees ariving by boat from Turkey.
The fifth center is expected to open in five days on the island of Kos, despite opposition from local residents due to the impact the refugee crisis has had on the island's tourism industry.
