Three Muslim separatist militants and two Indian army soldiers died in an attack Tuesday in Indian-administered Kashmir, a police spokesman said.
Three separatist militants crashed their vehicle into a camp housing the counter-insurgency wing of the Indian army near Handwara township, 85 kilometres (58 miles) north of Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar.
"Their vehicle got stuck after smashing into the outer gate," and soldiers opened fire on the insurgents before they could enter the camp's main building, the police spokesman said.
Two army soldiers and three militants were killed in the gunbattle, while two other soldiers were injured and taken to an army hospital in the neighbouring town of Kupwara, police said.
Police said militants belonging to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba group were involved in the violence.
