Five people were injured, two of them seriously, in fighting Sunday in the northwestern town of Tetovo, a hospital official told AFP.

Tetovo hospital director Rahim Thaci told AFP by phone from the trouble-hit town that since noon (1000 GMT) Sunday, "five people, among them a policeman, have been injured."

"The policeman and another seriously wounded person have been transferred to the hospital" in the Macedonian capital Skopje, Thaci said, giving no details of the identity of the injured.

Macedonian security forces on Sunday launched what they described as a final, two-phase operation against ethnic Albanian rebels in the hills above Tetovo – SKOPJE (AFP)
