Hundreds of Spanish fishermen have recently intercepted the Moroccan agricultural and sea products at Green Island and Elmira port and destroyed them in protest against the lack of any agreement between Morocco and the European Union regarding the renewal of the fishing agreement, according to the Moroccan Al Sabah newspaper.
Five hundred Spanish fishing boats were allowed to fish in the Moroccan territorial waters according to the expired agreement.
The paper cited officials at the Labor Committees and General Labor Union as saying that actions will be taken in this regard as from the February 2nd, 2001.
On the other side of Gibraltar, the Spanish fishermen associations in the Green Island decided to give the Spanish government an ultimatum to prevent the entry of Moroccan fish into the country.
Also, 4000 people demonstrated in the Spanish northwestern region of Galicia calling for the signing of a fishing agreement with Morocco immediately, said the paper.
The daily cited observers as saying that the escalation of the Spanish fishermen’s pressure, and their reflect, in fact, the restlessness of the Spanish farmers due to the cases of mad cow disease in Spain, and the fact that many Spaniards now avoid eating beef — Albawaba.com
