Repton School Dubai has become the first school in the world to visit The World, the ambitious 300-island project situated off the coast of Dubai.

A group of students from the school visited Germany, the first island on the development to have begun construction, to learn about the processes involved in the creation and stabilization of man-made islands.

The island is currently undergoing a soil improvement technique called vibro-compaction to ensure that the island is completely stable and ready for the construction of buildings such as villas and hotels.  The students witnessed the process which involves the use of electric depth vibrators that mechanically agitate and lock the sand particles together down to seabed level (a depth of 18 – 20 metres), to ensure that all construction on the island is stable and sound.

“Our geography curriculum includes learning about urban planning and development, and the make-up of landmasses, so it has been incredible to come out here today to actually see the construction process of the islands taking place,” said Mark Hutchings, Head of Geography at Repton School.

Eleven-year old Emily Wilson reported: “Being in the middle of the sea on a new island was pretty cool, and seeing how the sand was compacted was really interesting – it takes a lot of work!”

Germany island is one of six islands that make up The Heart of Europe, a development owned by the Kleindienst Group.  The island will house 20 exclusively private villas and will be ready for occupancy in 2011.
