Organizers of the first Arab journalism awards say there is a high level of interest from professional journalists working in regional print and television media.

Mona Al-Mari, director of Dubai's Media Club which organizes the event, said the number of people asking for information and filling out participation forms has acceded the club's expectations.

"We are happy the awards have aroused such great interest," Al-Mari told reporters in Dubai.

Al-Mari said journalists all over the Arab world should be rewarded for their hard work and service to the people.

The awards are divided into two categories - print and television media. Awards for print media include a journalist of the year award, and awards for best coverage. Awards for best printed news coverage in 2000 will be divided into sub-categories - politics and political analysis, economic coverage, investigative reporting, science and technology reporting, best column, cultural reporting, and sports reporting. A best picture and best cartoon will also be honored.

The TV awards will be for the best political, economic, sports, and cultural coverage in 2000.

An award will be given to the station with the best scoops of the year, according to Al-Mari.
