The Egyptian embassy in Amman was evacuated Monday after a phony bomb threat, witnesses told AFP.

After the embassy received an anonymous call warning that a bomb would go off there in one hour, Jordanian security forces rushed to the scene and evacuated the building, witnesses said.

Jordanian security also closed off the road where the embassy is located and carried out a thorough search of the area and parts of the building, but did not find anything.

Extra security was still posted around the seven-storey embassy late Monday.

An embassy spokesman refused to confirm or deny the information -- AMMAN (AFP)
