Thaksin Shinawatra's Thai Rak Thai party has scored a convincing win against the ruling Democrats in Thailand's national elections, according to exit polls released Saturday.

Thai Rak Thai has won 209 seats up for grabs in the 500-seat House of Representatives while the Democrats managed only 118, according to the Abac-KSC poll.

A survey conducted by the Suan Dusit Rajabhat University said Thai Rak Thai held 219 seats against 118 for the Democrats.

Figures prepared by The Nation newspaper group and the iTV network said many of the 400 constituencies were too close to call. The other 100 MPs will be selected from party lsits

But of the 241 constituencies where it was confident there was a clear winner, it said Thai Rak Thai had claimed 114 and the Democrats just 57.

In Bangkok, Thaksin routed the Democrats by 34 seats to two, it added.

All three pollsters said they surveyed between 10 and 20 percent of voters leaving targeted polling stations -- BANGKOK (AFP)
