President Joseph Estrada is to cease discussing his forthcoming impeachment trial in public once the hearings start next month and let his lawyers do the talking, his spokesman said Saturday.

"Once the hearings begin, the lawyers will conduct daily briefings on what transpired, based on their point of view," Estrada spokesman Ricardo Puno said in a statement.

The Senate convenes as an impeachment court on December 7 to determine Estrada's fitness to remain in office.

The House of Representatives has impeached him for corruption, bribery, betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the constitution. The penalty is removal from office.

Estrada has rejected the charges, calling it part of an opposition plot to hound him out of his post -- MANILA (AFP)
