Egyptians began voting Tuesday on the last day of parliamentary elections where President Hosni Mubarak's party looked set to keep its grip despite inroads by opposition and independent candidates.

The last 125 seats in the 454-member assembly were up for grabs after a four-week election hailed as the freest in years, notwithstanding opposition charges of strong-arm tactics by the police and others.

Polling stations opened at 8:00 am (0600 GMT) in the capital Cairo and seven other of the country's 26 governorates: Asyut, Beni Sueif, Giza, Marsa Matruh, Minya, New Valley and Qalyubiya – CAIRO (AFP)
