In Egypt, five people drowned Tuesday after trying to rescue each other from an open sewer in the town of Tukh, north of Cairo, police said.

A pedestrian fell into the uncovered sewer and was swept away. The same fate awaited a passer-by who tried to help, as well as three others who were also overpowered, according to AFP.

As rescue workers recovered the bodies, residents protested that authorities had failed to cover the sewer despite several appeals in the past. The protest dispersed after police authorities assured them those found negligent would pay the penalty. (Albawaba.com)
