A man who burned alive his eight-months pregnant wife after she refused to have an abortion was sentenced by a Cairo criminal court to life imprisonment, a judicial source said Tuesday.
Businessman Amr Abdel Rizak Fathallah demanded that his wife, Nagwa Nagy, have an abortion because he doubted the paternity of the child, the source told AFP.
During one of their quarrels she poured kerosene over herself and threatened to commit suicide, but instead of backing down from his demands he set her alight.
Nagy died in hospital with burns over 90 percent of her body, the source said. The husband tried to pass his wife's death off as a suicide, the source said, but the couple's maid, who witnessed the incident, told police otherwise.
