The number of Egyptians topped 69 million in January, growing at a pace of one birth every 23.7 seconds, Egypt's official statistics office said Sunday.
The growth rate fell to 1.9 percent in 2002, from 2.04 percent in 2001, the president of the national center for mobilization and statistics, Ihab Elwi, told MENA news agency.
The number of Egyptians reached 69.213 million in January 2003, an increase of 1.327 million from January of last year. The figure averaged 3,636 births a day, or a baby born every 23.7 seconds.
