Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Mussa and US Secretary of State-designate Colin Powell spoke by telephone late Sunday, one day after President-elect George W. Bush nominated the Gulf War hero to be Washington's top diplomat, an Egyptian foreign ministry source said.

Mussa offered his congratulations to the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the source, who did not provide any other details about the conversation.

Powell spoke by telephone earlier Sunday with Israel's caretaker Prime Minister Ehud Barak on the situation in the region, according to Barak's office -- CAIRO (AFP)
