Egypt said Monday it was premature to speak of a summit in Egypt involving US President Bill Clinton, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.
"According to my information, the White House has not announced such a summit and it's just media reports for now," Information Minister, Safwat el-Sherif, told reporters after a meeting with Mubarak.
US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, said Monday that the United States was studying several ideas regarding an eventual Clinton visit to the Middle East aimed at ending the violence threatening the peace process.
She said one of the ideas was holding a summit in Cairo.
The US television network CNN reported Sunday that there might be a summit at the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh bringing together the US, Egyptian, Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
Arafat met with Mubarak here Monday but no details of the talks were disclosed before he returned to Gaza - CAIRO (AFP)
