Gunmen opened fire at a security vehicle in the Haram district of Greater Cairo on Wednesday, killing one policeman and injuring another, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.
The assailants fled the scene and security forces are searching for the suspects.
Attacks on security forces and infrastructure by Islamist insurgents have become commonplace in much of Egypt since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
Hundreds of police and military have since been killed in shootings and bombings. Civilians have also been killed in the violence.
