The Dubai Municipality launched Tuesday its “Clean Up the World” campaign, drawing the support of more than 10,000 volunteers.
Various clean-up activities took place inside the boundaries of Dubai, including the straightening up of beaches, public places and premises.
The four-day campaign was supported by private companies, government departments, non-governmental organisations and schools.
The event was sponsored by Al Marmoum Diary Products, with the Dubai Labor Supply Company (Dulsco), Gulf Eternit Industries, Mohammed Tayib Khouri, and Midas Safety.
Hussein Nasser Lootah, the assistant director general for environment and public health affairs at the Dubai Municipality, formally launched this year's campaign at Creek Park.
The municipality said in a press release that “Clean Up the World” was a community-based event uniting diverse and scattered communities in a single massive clean-up of their surroundings with the key message being: "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle."
The clean-up concept, which began eleven years ago as an experiment in one country, Australia, is today one of the largest community participation events on the globe.
