Dubai municipality has pledged to crack down on illegal imports or trading in endangered animals and plants, or their products, the Gulf News reported Wednesday.
A meeting was held with government agencies which recommended steps to implement the convention on the international trade in endangered species of fauna and flora (CITES), to which the UAE is a signatory.
According to officials, the meeting was the result of the “pressing need to overcome obstacles to complying with the convention.”
Redha Hassan Salman, head of the environment protection and safety section was quoted by the daily as saying that “this meeting was the first of its kind, but there should be similar meetings at the federal level to achieve results."
He urged the public to inform officials about any trade in rare and endangered flora and fauna, or their parts or components such as tiger skins, ivory, turtle shells and some rare local birds and plants – Albawaba.com
