A Dubai criminal court sentenced a taxi driver for one year in prison, as he fled the country with Dh562,000 which he had found in a leather briefcase left on the back seat of his cab by an Egyptian passenger, Khaleej Times reported.

The driver, a Pakistani national, identified as Anwar Zeb Adel Sher, was convicted by the court of taking goods, which did not belong to him.

According to the daily, the driver was working for a Dubai-based cab company when he took the passenger from Sharjah International Airport to the Gulf Hotel in Abu Dhabi on March 24th this year.

And when the passenger N.S.A. from Egypt arrived at the place he got down from the cab and forgot to take his briefcase.

Finding out that he had left the brief case in the cab, the man ran back to the place where the taxi was parked but found that the cabbie was already gone, said the paper.

The briefcase carried $45,000, Kuwaiti dinars22,300, Saudi riyals29,500 and Egyptian pounds10,000.

The passenger called the authorities and gave them the name of the taxi company whose driver had dropped him at the hotel.

When the passenger was shown an album of drivers' pictures he identified the convict, it added.

However, he was told that the taxi-driver had gone to Abu Dhabi and had left for his country on the same day – Albawaba.com
