A defeated candidate in Egypt's parliamentary elections opened fire on supporters of his victorious rival Saturday, leaving one man dead and a 13-year-old girl wounded, court sources said.
The losing candidate, Salah Mohamed Salah, turned his revolver on supporters of elected deputy Hatem Shaaban as they passed in front of his house shouting slogans in favor of the victorious Shaaban in the village of Atmida, some 135 kilometers (85 miles) north of Cairo, in the governorship of Dakahliya in the Nile delta.
Mohamed Ibrahim al-Berri, 24, was killed in the shooting, and a young girl, Lamiaa Hussein Ghazal, was wounded, the source said.
The court has opened an investigation and put independent Salah Mohamed Salah in custody for four days, the source said.
This latest fatality brings to ten the number of deaths in election-related incidents since the start of the elections October 18.
The elections were held over three stages, each with two rounds. The second round of the last stage is scheduled for November 14 and the full results of the elections will be announced the following day.
At the end of the penultimate round of voting which took place Wednesday, the ruling National Democratic party secured a large majority, winning 258 of the 321 seats being contested from a total of 454 seats in the assembly – CAIRO (AFP)
