The government in Algeria has set October 10th as the date for municipal elections and vowed the poll would be fair, state media reported on Friday.
"The date for the municipal ballot is arranged for Thursday, October 10, 2002. Every measure would be taken to allow voters to freely practice their rights in selecting their representatives," said a statement from President Abdulaziz Bouteflika's office.
The statement was carried by the state-run radio and the official Algerian news agency APS.
The five-year term of mayors and other local government elected officials ends on October 22 this year.
