Daesh has carried out its largest mass execution so far this year, killing 33 people near the eastern Syrian city of Deir Ezzor, The Independent reported.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said its activists were "able to monitor the execution and see the bodies."

The monitoring group's report said the 33 people, aged 18-25, were killed with sharp tools next to a pit that was "filled with blood."

It is unknown whether those executed were from Syrian government forces or opposition fighters.

On Tuesday this week dozens of civilians, including several children, were killed in a chemical weapons attack on the western city of Idlib in Syria.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by Assad government forces.
