Daesh has claimed the car bombing of a security building in the Greater Cairo area early Thursday morning, Reuters reports.
The Sinai affiliate of Daesh published a statement on Twitter, claiming the bombing was a reprisal for the execution of six of its members accused of commiting an attack in Cairo last year.
"Let the apostates of the police and army, the followers of Jews, know we are a people who do not forget our revenge," the statement read.
A car bomb exploded in the vicinity of the the Homeland Security building in northern tip of Cairo in Qalyubia governorate early Thursday morning.
"A car exploded after the driver suddenly stopped in front of the state security building, exited the vehicle, and fled on a motorbike that was following the car," the interior ministry said in a statement.
According to Aswat al-Masriya, the explosion sent shock waves through the Greater Cairo area, damaging nearby houses and causing glass to shatter.
People on social media have reported hearing the explosion in the neighbourhoods of Dokki, Haram, Zamalek and Maadi.
Insurgency in Egypt has reached an all time high, as attacks in the Sinai region as well as within the country's capital have become increasingly frequent.
