Daesh affiliates have claimed responsibility for the suicide bomb attacks that lead to 17 deaths in Benghazi, AP reported Wednesday, with branches under the umbrella group based in Libya.

Three suicide car bombs had killed 12 and injured 25 others in the eastern city of Benghazi, where the militants had targeted Libya's elected government and its supporters. Two of the bombs were set by the Daesh-affiliated group, The Shura Council of Benghazi Revolutionaries, who also claimed online to have carried out the third explosion.

On the same day, an attack on rival militants left another five dead in Sirte.

Security officials told AP the attacks were in retaliation for the death of a top leader, Mohammed al-Aribi, who died Monday.

A UN report released Monday addressed human rights concerns in the country.

"Civilians in Libya, including human rights defenders, have few or no avenues to seek protection or access to remedy for the harm suffered," the report said, according to AP.

Benghazi has seen a lot of violence in the past few days. The attacks Wednesday followed a raid on an army checkpoint that killed seven and wounded 11
