cts cyclocross athletes katie compton and ryan trebon continue us domination
Colorado Springs, CO – CTS Athlete, coach, and three-time US National Cyclocross Champion Katie Compton knows winning is in the details, and she left nothing to chance during her two dominating cyclocross victories November 3-4 in Boulder, Colorado. Fellow CTS Athlete and US National Champion Ryan Trebon also won both Elite Men’s races at Saturday’s Redline Cup and Sunday’s UCI C1 Boulder Cup.
Compton, who is currently the UCI Points Leader, has won all but two cyclocross races she’s entered this season - and she finished second in those two. With a combination of incredible fitness, superior technical skills, and unparalleled attention to detail, she consistently finds the power to ride away from her competition. Even though she was leading during this weekend’s races in Colorado, Compton changed bikes frequently as she and her mechanic tried to find the perfect tire pressure. Her CTS Coach, Craig Griffin, commented, “It just shows her commitment to riding as perfect a race as possible. She was the same way when she was riding as a pilot for a US Paralympic tandem. She can handle adversity and recover when things go wrong in races, but her intense focus on the details prevents things from going wrong in the first place.”
Following this weekend’s races in Colorado, Compton is heading to Europe to compete in UCI World Cup events and continue her preparation for the World Championships. Perhaps her biggest dilemma right now is which jersey to wear. Her choices include the US National Champion jersey, UCI Points Leader jersey, or the US Grand Prix of Cyclocross Series Leader jersey.
Trebon On The Mend, But Still Winning
US National Champion Ryan Trebon has been battling a mysterious loss of power in his left leg for the past few weeks, but his convincing victories in Boulder show that he’s on his way to making a full recovery. The lanky ‘cross star’s trouble began during his recent European campaign, with soreness in his lower back and progressed to numbness and a loss of power in his left leg – but only during the maximum-intensity efforts necessary for success in training and races.
He returned to the States and has been working with his coach, CTS Premier Coach Jim Lehman, to find the source of and solution to the problem. While rest and rehabilitation are difficult to integrate into the middle of a ‘cross season, Lehman has been orchestrating a delicate balance between recovery and training in order to keep Trebon’s season on track. He commented:
We’ve been working with doctors, physical therapists, and even acupuncturists, to face this problem head on. We can’t take a ‘wait-and-see’ approach; the season is short and problems like Ryan is experiencing rarely resolve themselves without being proactive. Ryan did what I wish more athletes would do. He realized something was wrong, spoke up quickly, and started working toward a solution immediately. Too many athletes struggle for way too long before getting help for minor injuries, and they turn into major ones.
Trebon will remain in the States for at least another week to continue training and working out the troubles with his back before returning to Europe. “He wants to get back to Europe for the World Cup races, but at the same time he wants to be competitive over there. In many ways, it’s better to miss a big race and come back at full strength for the next one, rather than just race for the sake of racing and finish in the middle of the field,” said Lehman.
