A Lebanese man wanted in connection with 177 criminal cases was killed on Tuesday during a shoot-out with security forces in Maqneh, near Baalbek, reported the Daily Star newspaper.

Taifour Moqdad, along with several accomplices who managed to escape arrest, exchanged fire with Internal Security Forces personnel, who laid siege to his home.

He sustained several gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital where he died, said the paper.

Moqdad was previously convicted in absentia in 177 cases of murder, car robbery, drug and arms dealing and dealing in counterfeit currency.

Police commander Samir Sobh said the raid on Moqdad's home was sparked by a recent increase in car thefts. He said police discovered Moqdad's location after an extensive surveillance operation.

The army released a statement saying it had cordoned off the area in a bid to round up Moqdad's accomplices, said the paper - Albawaba.com
