The head of the communist party in Moldova is the only candidate so far for presidential elections next Friday, election officials said Friday.
Vladimir Vorovin registered Friday. The deadline for would-be candidates to register was Saturday.
Moldova plans to become the first former Soviet republic to choose a president by indirect vote.
Parliament announced on November 2 that it would abolish direct elections to choose the next head of state. Under a constitutional reform voted in July and an amendment adopted in September, the president is to be elected by a three-fifths parliamentary majority on December 1 -- CHISINAU (AFP)
