Commission: Not enough time to arrange Palestinian parliament elections

The Palestinian Election Commission declared Monday that parliament elections cannot be held on July 17, as planned, because it needs more time to prepare.

According to the commission, it needs at least two months, from the time a new election law is ratified, to prepare for the vote, The AP reported. Meanwhile, the legislation has been held up by a dispute between Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and parliament over how many legislators should be chosen in districts and how many from party slates.

Meanwhile, local sources said Monday that members of the Palestinian police force attacked a crew of Al Jazeera TV, while filming a sit-in near Al Aqsa University in Gaza. According to RNA, eyewitnesses added that a number of police officers beat up the crew members, after being banned by them from filming demonstrations and sit-ins organized by the students of Al Aqsa University in Gaza to protest a decision to nullify students' elections results.
