The UAE has completed procedures to introduce a national identity number for citizens and residents to ensure security. This plan will be implemented shortly, said Lt Gen. Dr Mohammed Saeed Al Badi, Minister of Interior.

According to the plan, which has been considered over the past two years, every UAE national and resident will get a computerized number which will be recorded in their identity papers or labor cards, Al Badi said.

"The scheme will be useful in various fields as it will provide an integrated data base about the population in the country. It will also constitute an important factor in maintaining security, ensuring discipline in the labour market and tackling the imbalance in the demographic structure as it will facilitate the detection of visa and labour offences," Al Badi told the latest issue of the monthly Police magazine, as quoted by Gulf News.
