Millions of Chinese workers will have to take computer classes as the government has launched a nationwide drive to modernize the economy, state media reported on Saturday.
China aims to teach basic computer skills to 50 percent of all young and middle-aged staff in state enterprises and institutions over the next three years, the Xinhua news agency said.
The campaign was initiated by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions and three other government departments early this year, and has so far led to the training of 12 million workers, according to Xinhua.
The government drive comes as Chinese society as a whole is becoming increasingly computerized.
In the July to September period more than 2.5 million personal computers -- including desktops, notebooks and servers -- were sold on the domestic market, and sales for the whole year are expected to top 6.2 million, state media reported recently -- BEIJING (AFP)
