Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan Thursday urged Israel and Palestine to end the weeks of violence which have plagued the Palestinian territories, state media said.

Tang's remarks came during a meeting with visiting Middle Eastern envoys, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Both Tang and Vice Foreign Minister Ji Peiding said the Chinese government was deeply concerned about the high number of Palestinian civilian casualties.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China was ready to work with the international community to push for a settlement to the crisis, Xinhua reported them as saying.

The deaths of two Palestinian women on Thursday brings to 196 the number of people killed, most of them Palestinians, since violence erupted after a controversial visit to a contested Jerusalem shrine by Israeli hardline opposition leader Ariel Sharon in late September – BEIJING (AFP)
