Automobile distributors were told Tuesday that all new cars imported from next January 1st must be fitted with catalytic converters, and that all cars on the roads from January 1st, 2007 must be installed with these devices, the Gulf News reported Wednesday.
Petrol stations will pump only unleaded gasoline from 2007.
Mohammed Ali bin Zayed, assistant undersecretary for industrial affairs in the Ministry of Finance and Industry was quoted by the paper as saying that "we are also working on setting diesel emission standards, and this could be implemented as early as next year."
Addressing car dealers on new rules for the domestic auto industry, he said that the three domestic petrol suppliers would gradually increase their unleaded component until it becomes the only petrol on offer.
Petrol stations in UAE already offer unleaded gasoline, which is available in an estimated 30 percent of the UAE’s gas stations, and currently priced at the retail level of Dh 4.25 ($1.15) per gallon – Albawaba.com
