ALBAWABA - The Egyptian Ministry of Health reported that at least 10 people have been killed after their bus swerved into the Nile River.

Local reports said that the bus had 22 workers on board from Menofia Governorate heading to Giza where they worked in a factory. 10 of them were pronounced dead, 9 were rescued and 4 remained missing.

"The toll is at 10 and might rise," Ministry’s Spokesperson Hossam Abdelghaffar told Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The Al-Ahram newspaper first reported on the accident, stating that the driver, who had released the handbrake, was captured while attempting to flee. He had gotten into "a verbal argument" with one of the passengers before leaving the vehicle, it reported.

Egypt's labor minister, Hassan Shehata, said the minibus was carrying "girls working on a farm," but did not say whether they were minors. The Ministry of Social Solidarity assured that families of those affected in the tragic accident will be compensated.

Al-Ahram report also added that the prosecutor's office ordered a technical inspection of the bus to determine the reasons that led for it to plunge into the Nile.
