burjuman presents diverse works of art during art & fashion

Art Exposé features more than 250 works by several artists, including Madé Wianta and Hetty Rose

BurJuman has once again transformed its halls into an art gallery in celebration of Art and Fashion 2007.  From December 1-14, Art Exposé is bringing together nearly 30 talented local artists alongside exclusive exhibits by renowned Indonesian artist Madé Wianta and talented English designer Hetty Rose to present their various artworks, paintings and designs.

Art Exposé, the vibrant component to Art and Fashion, brings together artistic elements to the world of fashion and creativity.  Drawing on each other for countless inspirational statements, this exhibition highlights talents demonstrated by several local artists who have often borrowed insight from the evolving fashion in their art, and designers who have expressed modern art in their versatile designs.  Together, they offer a colourful showcase of ingenuity and style which are on display in BurJuman.

“Art and Fashion is an opportunity to bridge artistic expressions with fashion elements and reinforce how fashion design has echoed trends in modern art.  From Prada to Versace to Dolce & Gabbana, designers have pushed the boundaries of fashion with their creations which have been transformed into virtual works of art on the runway,” said Ms. Sabina Khandwani, Head of PR and Marketing, BurJuman.

Art enthusiasts will enjoy the variety of artworks exhibiting on the 1st and 2nd floors of the North Village. With displays such as ceramics, acrylic, watercolour and oil painting, mixed media, and even sketches, the countless range of art gives shoppers an opportunity to not only witness live painting activities initiated by some artists, but also purchase local art to support home-grown talent.

In addition to the Art Exposé gallery, BurJuman welcomes a taste of traditional Balinese art in an exhibition by Indonesian painter Madé Wianta, in association with the Ministry of Culture of Indonesia and Al Abbar Gallery.  This multi-model artist, sculptor and painter will exhibit some of his most elaborate canvasses in the Fountain Court, South Village for the duration of the event. For over two decades, some 14,000 works of art have emerged from his energy and creativity including paintings, installations, drawings, and publications. His mastery of color and form on canvas is matched by his mastery of words in poetry, body movement in dance, and sense of rhythm in music.

What better way to add a fashionable touch to cultural art than seeing an exhibition by English shoe designer, Hetty Rose. Widely known for integrating the vintage Japanese kimono silks with the craftsmanship of shoe-making, Hetty creates shoes that tell an ancient story in a modern time.  This interactive addition to Art and Fashion will see Hetty bring to the spotlight the shoe-making process that is based on the theory of re-using and re-working vintage materials in a creative and sustainable way, and accordingly hand making shoes to fit.

“Art is a universal message of expression and has always been an inspiration to fashion, just as much as fashion has had an effect on art.  Both are forms of a visual language that have their own identity and have influenced each other.  This close connection between them has been evident by way of various artistic movements, whether expressed in dress shapes, fabric adornments, accessories or jewellery,” added Ms. Khandwani.

These exquisite displays are only a taste of the host of artistic presentations held throughout BurJuman this month.  From artists’ exhibitions to avant-garde fashions shows, December will see eclectic fashion and creative art meet under one roof.

Art and Fashion 2007 exhibits will be on display daily in BurJuman from December 1-14, 2007 during mall hours
