AFP reports that two bombs exploded on Sunday near the Sayyida Zeinab Shia shrine, killing at least 12 people and wounding dozens more.

According to a monitor from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least one of the explosions was caused by a car bomb that exploded near the shrine, located just south of the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The monitor did not know the cause of the second blast; however, state television in Syria reported that the second blast was caused by a suicide bomber.

According to AFP, the shrine is regarded as an important pilgrimage site to Shia as it contains the grave of the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad and has been targeted many times in the past.

Two suicide attacks that killed nine people were carried out near a checkpoint at the very same shrine in February 2015. Later that same month, Al-Nusra Front, an affiliate of Al-Qaeda, also killed at least nine people when a bomb ripped through a bus carrying pilgrims to the shrine.
