ALBAWABA- U.S. President Joe Biden and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement on Thursday to enhance Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression.

The deal, inked during the G7 summit in Italy, ensures continued U.S. support for Ukraine, irrespective of potential political changes in the U.S., including the possible re-election of former President Donald Trump.

The agreement provides a framework for long-term U.S. assistance to modernize Ukraine’s military and is seen as a step towards Ukraine's future NATO membership. "Our goal is to strengthen Ukraine's credible defense and deterrence capabilities for the long term," Biden stated.

In case of an armed attack or threat against Ukraine, top U.S. and Ukrainian officials are required to meet within 24 hours to assess and determine additional defense needs.

The U.S. reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty, particularly amid renewed Russian offensives in Ukraine's east.

Despite Biden's firm stance, the agreement's future is uncertain due to Trump’s lead in election polls. Trump has criticized prolonged U.S. involvement in Ukraine and advocated for greater European responsibility in supporting Kyiv.

This landmark security pact signifies a robust commitment to Ukraine’s defense amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
