A woman passenger died in a car chase in eastern Beirut overnight after the vehicle failed to stop at a police checkpoint, police said on Tuesday. The death of the woman brings to four the number of people killed in the capital.
After a chase of several hours, the woman was found in the car, bleeding from a bullet wound, police said, according to AFP. The driver, who police said had refused to stop at the checkpoint because he was wanted on undisclosed charges, was later caught by security forces.
On Monday, three other people died in a similar incident at an army checkpoint outside Beirut international airport. According to Naharnet, Lebanese soldiers opened fire at a speeding taxi cab which drove past their checkpoint near Beirut Airport, killing a Syrian convicted of forgery as well as two other Lebanese citizens.
Police identified the fatalities as Hamadeh Mahmoud Haj Ahmad, a Syrian, and Hussein Karaki and Qassem Noueddine, both Lebanese citizens.
