Bahrain’s telecom Company, Batelco, plans to introduce a new fiber-optic transmission technology called Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) to handle network growth and the expanding needs of customers.
The fiber-optic transmission technique employs light wavelengths to transmit huge amounts of data, reported the Gulf Daily News.
A $1.2 million contract was signed by Batelco Support Services chief operating officer, John Steel, and Almoayed Telecom managing director, Nabil Almoayed, to deploy the technology on a turnkey basis.
A crucial component of optical networks, DWDM facilitates the transmission of e-mail, video, multimedia, data and voice, which are carried in internet protocol, asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), among others.
DWDM is a critical milestone in Batelco's plans to transform Bahrain's telecommunications infrastructure to respond to customer demands using a single network without any interruption of services, said a Batelco spokesman.
The deployment of DWDM will pave the way to providing customers in every sector with a dedicated service that offers them speed, quality, capability and facility to integrate current and next generation technologies and services.
“In the past few years, the usage of the internet witnessed a growth of 300 per cent per year, along with the increasing use of faxes, multiple telephone lines, modems, teleconferencing and data and video transmission,” he said.
This created an enormous challenge for the telecommunications service provider, and Batelco met this challenge by incorporating the latest technologies, including DWDM, said the spokesman – Albawaba.com
