Turkish consumer advocates are criticizing the latest regulations on cellular base stations as insufficient, saying they remain a public health threat.
The Autonomous Consumers' Union general chairman, Bulent Deniz, said the Transportation Ministry's regulations of August 4th were unacceptable.
"They were prepared cursorily and arrangements that may threaten human health unfortunately received a place in the legal document," he said at a weekend news conference.
"We will go to court to cancel the regulations, which are not in line with the rights of citizens and endanger human health,'' Deniz said, adding that cancer would increase over the next decade because of Turkey's 500 base stations unless measures are taken.
Base stations are booster transmitters, usually deployed on the roofs of buildings, to increase the area covered by cellular phones. Saying that the base station inspection authority should be given to local management and governors, Deniz wants base stations banned near public and educational institutions, fuel oil facilities, rest homes, playgrounds and other public places.
