Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has decided to head back to Washington after the apparent peaceful resolution of a hijack drama in Israel, officials said Sunday.

Barak had decided to turn back to Israel and postpone talks with US President Bill Clinton aimed at ending the violence blazing through the Palestinian territories as the hijacked Russian plane headed to Israel.

David Ziso, a spokesman for Barak, said the prime minister himself, who was in London when the drama unfolded, had given the authorization for the plane to land.

"He then decided to return to the United States given the positive developments in the matter" he told AFP.

Israel's army chief of staff earlier announced that the hijack drama was almost over after one hijacker, apparently working alone, had surrendered – JERUSALEM (AFP)
