Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak denounced the attack Friday that left one Israeli settler dead and two others injured near the West Bank town of Hebron, and promised that the perpetrators would be punished.

"These cowardly attacks against civilians will not stop us from fighting violence and terrorism," said a statement released by Barak's office.

Barak said the attack was "very grave" and those responsible were "assassins.

"As we have shown in the past, these odious assassins who commit such acts will not go unpunished," Barak said.

Earlier Friday, Rina Didursky, a 45-year-old teacher and mother of five, was killed by gunfire as she and two others were travelling in a car on the outskirts of the Jewish settlement of Kiryat Arba, near Hebron.

The driver of the vehicle was seriously wounded and the other person, also a teacher, suffered slight injuries. The victims were evacuated by helicopter, military officials said.

The killing raised the death toll to 307 since violence between Israel and Palestinians broke out 10 weeks ago. Most of those killed have been Palestinian stone-throwers.

On Thursday, three Israelis, a soldier and two settlers, were wounded in a similar attack near the Palestinian village of Burqa farther north on the West Bank -- JERUSALEM (AFP)
