Bahrain’s authorities have embarked on restoring one of the country’s historic mosques, and it is expected to be back in use within a year, reported the Gulf Daily on Saturday.
The renovation of the Siyadi Mosque is being carried out by the ministries of information and Islamic affairs.
A team of specialists from the Culture and National Heritage Directorate began the work last month and it is hoped it will be completed by the end of the year, said the paper.
Once renovation is complete, authorities at the Islamic affairs ministry will make the arrangements to re-open the mosque to the public.
The mosque has not been used for public prayer since 1998.
Head of restoration and maintenance Khatoon Al Ansari said the mosque, next to the historic Siyadi pearl merchants house, had been neglected for 14 years, as the last maintenance work on it was carried out in 1987.
“This mosque is one of the most unique and important mosques in Bahrain, built back in the middle of the last century,” she said.
“It has suffered greatly within the past 10 years and has not received proper restoration or maintenance,” she added – Albawaba.com
