Sweeping changes to bring about long awaited political, economic and social reforms in Bahrain are now underway as the committee entrusted with the task of implementing the National Action Charter started at this week's meeting, the first in the series, to make decisions on this issue.

The meeting was chaired by its chairman Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and BDF Commander in Chief, reported Gulf Times on Friday.

Issues to be taken up for discussion include the laws of societies, associations and clubs, press and publication, public tenders, constitutional court civil service and personal status, anti-monopoly, stock exchange, naturalization, passports, labor organizations, women's rights and the power of the judiciary, said the report.

The Emirati paper added that the committee will also decide to take up important issues such as unemployment, job opportunities, promoting citizen awareness about rights and duties, preparing them for democratic life and for assuming responsibilities and holding positions in public councils and institutions.

The Bahrainis voted overwhelmingly in February in favor of the National Charter proposed by the government to introduce political changes and revive democracy in the Gulf emirate – Albawaba.com
