Bahrain's Shiite opposition leader will go on trial later this month after being charged with promoting violent change of the current Al-Khalifa regime, according to AFP news agency.

Sheikh Ali Salman, head of the Al-Wefaq bloc has been in custody since December 28 after heading a protest against elections that were held in November. His party boycotted the elections.

There have been widespread calls from the international community for the Bahraini government to release him and daily protests have been held in Shiite villages throughout the kingdom.

Tensions in Bahrain have been ongoing since an uprising in 2011 where Shiites called for more representation in the Sunni-led government.

Sheikh Ali Salman will stand trial from January 28. He denies the charges.
