Emir Sheikh Hamad al Khalifa will meet with Bahrainis who have returned from exile under a general amnesty as part of a reconciliation program, reported the Gulf News Monday.

Sheikh Hamad, said the paper, plans to meet all sections of the community to build national unity, implement the National Action Charter and bring about political, economic and social changes to modernize the country.

"Under this program, he [the emir] will meet all those who returned home after long years of exile and entered the mainstream to join hands with others to play their role in the current modernization program," an official told the paper.

Sheikh Hamad issued last month a decree pardoning more than 290 political prisoners and allowing the return of 108 exiles only days before Bahrainis voted overwhelmingly in a referendum for a new national charter which promises a freely-elected parliament

"Society in Bahrain is based on the one family spirit without any discrimination or exclusion," said the official.

Days after the vote, the emir abolished the emergency laws in force in the Gulf state for more than 25 years – Albawaba.com
