The first case of mad cow disease in an Austrian animal may have been discovered in meat which was sold to Germany and subjected to testing there, the Austrian news agency APA reported Sunday.

The seven-year-old animal, which was raised in the Austrian Tyrol region, had been slaughtered in the German southern state of Baden Wuerttemberg, and had subsequently tested positive to a first probe for bovine spongiform encephelopathy, or BSE.

Further tests must be carried out on the meat to confirm the case, APA reported -- VIENNA (AFP)
