Australian International School (AIS) Sharjah, the first Australian school in the region, reiterated its goal of providing the best international education in the region, at an iftar event organised for the school community.
The school, a partnership between the Government of Queensland, Australia and the UAE based Al Sharif Investment Group, opened in September this year and currently caters to students from KG to grade 6. It provides a wide range of academic, cultural, physical and social activities to support its philosophy of catering to all students, with different talents and interests.
“This is a momentous day for us. What began as an idea of excellence in education is now a reality. It is truly rewarding to see parents and children enjoying the school’s facilities. AIS’ key differentiator is our true internationalism. Diversity in cultural background and religion provides an environment that fosters tolerance, understanding and an appreciation of difference. We focus on providing quality education and uncompromising teaching standards that adhere to Australian academic regulations while utilising creative learning techniques that stimulate curiosity. Our concerted effort is to make our pupils inquisitive learners in an environment that encourages independence, cooperation and collaborative problem solving,” said Helen Lucas, Principal of Australian International School.
AIS is the first school in the Middle East offering an Australian curriculum. Australia’s education system is well known for its high quality in both teachers and curriculum and is recognised by UNESCO as being the finest in the world.
The curriculum covers all key areas such as English, Maths, Science, Studies of Society and the Environment, The Arts, Technology, Health and Physical Education and Languages. AIS is built to accommodate some 1800 students and over the next few years will grow to a campus providing Grades KG through to Grade 12.
“Our curriculum has been designed to follow the Australian education system and emphasises co-operative and investigative learning. Our difference is not the subjects we teach, but the manner in which it is taught. We engage students at a deeper level of understanding and challenge them to learn in different ways rather than just memorizing facts. Through our relationship with the Queensland Government, we belong to a system that supports 670 000 students, 1700 schools, 47 000 teachers and 9 universities. This is a partnership that adds strength to what we are doing here in the Emirates,” added Mrs. Lucas.
