Australia has pledged AUD10 million ($7.9 million) in aide to Lebanon to help soften the blow of the Syrian spillover, the country's ambassador announced Tuesday.

In remarks to reporters after a meeting with Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, Ambassador Glenn Miles said his country was responding to the Syrian crisis with a donation of AUD20 million, half of which will be received by Lebanon.

Lebanon hosts an estimated 1.5 million refugees who fled Syria after the outbreak of the crisis in March 2011.

Beirut has appealed to donor states for help with the refugee crisis, which has placed immense pressure on its already inadequate infrastructure.
